Doctors Contracting Directly With Patients

Last week’s Grand Rounds, hosted at Bedside Manner, included an interesting article from Dr. Alan Dappen at Get Better Health.  Dr. Dappen is inviting his fellow primary care physicians to switch their practices over to a system of directly contracting with patients rather than with health insurance companies and Medicare/Medicaid.  He explains that 75% of people would be able to receive their primary care services for about $300 a year in this sort of system.  Their health insurance could still be used for emergencies, higher-cost specialists, and serious illnesses or injuries.  The

NYC Mayor Aims to Ban Smoking in More Places

Smoking cuts thousands of lives short each year by contributing to a variety of deadly diseases – but fewer people may realize that tobacco use is a major red flag that usually leads life insurance companies to charge substantially more for premiums.

Of course, many know firsthand just how difficult it can be to quit smoking. But there are also a growing number of products on the market that can help them quit, from nicotine patches and gum to prescription drugs and even counseling services.

Number of Americans Without Health Insurance Rose in 2009

The number of Americans with health insurance fell in 2009. About 253.6 million people had public or private health coverage in 2009, down from 255.1 million in 2008. The decline marks the first decline since the government began tracking the figure in 1987, according to Bloomberg. Like what you see? Lawsuit Challenging Health Care Law Approved to Advance

On Tuesday, the new health care reform law’s constitutionality was legally challenged after a federal judge indicated he would advance a lawsuit filed by elected officials from 20 states. In the lawsuit, the elected officials plan to fight the requirement that most individuals must obtain health insurance to avoid penalties from the government.

Judge Won’t Dismiss Lawsuit

After presiding over a two-hour hearing regarding constitutionality of the health care reform law, Judge Roger Vinson of Federal District Court announced that he was leaning toward allowing representatives from 20 states push forward in their lawsuit.

While his ruling was not official, he admitted he would probably ignore the government’s attempts to dismiss the lawsuit. He no

Government Announces Upcoming Distracted Driving Summit

While considerable progress has been made in recent months against the problem of distracted driving, the U.S. government is continuing to maintain its focus on doing more to keep motorists safe and to help keep auto insurance rates down.

Numerous states have taken steps in the past couple of years to ban distracted driving. Most of these new laws have focused on the particularly dangerous practice of texting behind the wheel, since this is most likely to take an individual’s eyes off the road. A smaller number of laws have targeted the use of cell phones behind the wheel.

Still, enforcement of these laws is difficult when considering how hard it can be for police to actually spot an individual texting behind the wheel.
