Motorists Reminded to be Wary of Wildlife

People who want to avoid accidents have more than just other drivers to watch out for – many parts of the country have also seen an upswing over the past several years in collisions between vehicles and deer.

Recent data highlighted by a major insurance company noted that auto insurance claims involving deer collisions had risen ten times faster over the past five years than the number of miles driven by U.S. motorists.

In total, the company reported that it had processed 2.3 million collision claims involving deer and vehicles, which would mark a 21.1 percent increase over figures from five years ago. The data found that West Virginia residents led the nation with a 1 in 42 chance of striking a deer over the next 12 months. Other states with high numbers of deer collisions were Iowa, Michigan, South Dakota and Montana.

Motorists should always be careful when driving at night and around sunset and sunrise because many larger animals tend to be active during these hours. A collision with a deer can result in significant damage to a vehicle and potential injury to occupants.

In many northern states, moose can pose an even greater safety hazard for motorists who don’t watch out for wildlife.
