Burglar Alarm Scam Artists Take Advantage of Uninformed in Texas
Buying a burglar alarm is one way consumers may be able to reduce their home insurance premiums.
Individuals interested in making such a purchase should proceed with caution, however, in order to avoid falling victim to scam artists, according to the Texas Burglar and Fire Alarm Association. Unlicensed college students in Texas often employ high-pressure tactics during the May through August selling season.
“These sales people may look reputable but our experience in Texas and throughout the United States shows that they are well-trained scam artists taking advantage of the uninformed or the elderly,” Chris Russell, president of the Texas Burglar and Fire Alarm Association, said.
In order to protect themselves from such individuals, homeowners should request a Department of Public Safety Private Security Bureau pocket card from their burglar alarm company representative. Those that have passed background checks from the state should be able to provide such identification. Consumers should also avoid offers that seem too good to be true and contact the police if they are uncomfortable.
